Maine has over 60 lighthouses, a couple of them are just a short ride out of downtown Portland so we went to get a closer look. A nice getaway from trendy downtown and a perfect chance to ingest some refreshing sea air.
Portland Breakwater Lighthouse, nicknamed the ‘Bug Light’ due to its small stature in comparison to others, has its own park with a ship monument dedicated to the shipyard construction industry which supported the war effort. Surrounded by lapping waters this park is a family friendly place with lots of kite flyers. You could spending hours just watching the boats skip across the waves and the planes swoop in low on their approach to the nearby airport.
Visible across the bay is Portland Head Light; the state’s oldest lighthouse. It’s situated at another family friendly park; Fort Williams, an ex US Army post. You can explore the ruined fortifications and venture into the pitch black tunnels if you have the nerve!
